UN Reveal Immigrant Children’s Plight in Israel
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child strongly criticised Israel for their detainment of children. According to the report prepared by the committee, detention of children has been increasing since August 2011. There are three detentions centres for children, including Yahalom, which is located at Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
The committee authorities pointed out in the report that the children in the detention centres in the airport were being held far from some family members and in poor conditions. According the the announcement made by the committee, there is no access in the detention centres for social services, health or legal counselling. Children are woken up in midnight raids and brought to these detention centres after being detained in an extremely distressing manner.
In the announcement, committee authorities said “the case of every child must be looked at separately.” Furthermore, the committee called upon Israel to ease access to education and health services for the children of asylum-seekers and immigrants.
